Wheelchair friendly for keen gardener
Mary's client lived in a newly converted stable block which had been adapted for wheelchair use.
As a keen gardener with a love of the outdoors, her client wished to have a garden which was equally wheelchair accessible.
There was no natural shade and this too was an important requirement to be brought into the design. The garden was on a sloping site with a 3m gradient.
The combination of site conditions and the client's requirements were an exciting challenge for Mary.
The Brief
- Wheelchair access surrounding the house
- Wheelchair access to a new summer house at the bottom of the garden
- Area for entertaining and BBQ
- Ability to tend the garden
- A pond
The Outcome
- An attractive paved patio surrounding the house was linked by a gentle slope to a lower paved patio for entertaining
- A two tier raised pond with interconnecting waterfall borders the lower paved patio
- Colourful, easy care planting fills the raised beds
- Raised beds provide easy access for gardening
- Summer house on raised decking at the bottom of the garden results in easy access from top to bottom on a wide, gently sloping path
- Two pergolas and carefully positioned trees provide plenty of shade
