Easy maintenance garden in Ardingly
Mary Stevenson's clients had recently moved into a village centre 17th Century cottage in West Sussex.
The garden was overgrown and unmanageable. There were two tiny areas for seating. The clients were not keen gardeners.
The Brief
- Courtyard garden-no lawn!
- All year round interest from foliage with cottage feel overall
- Planting to be in keeping with the age of the cottage
- Create more seating areas
The Outcome
- By creating different levels, four distinct seating areas have been made, each with their own atmosphere
- Each seating area enjoys a different aspect and is therefore sunny at different times of the day
- Dark green painted obelisks made at a local forge added height to the planting scheme with honeysuckle and clematis entwined around them
- Brick built raised beds create the setting for trailing plants and other old varieties to thrive
- The garden is now enjoyed throughout the year!
