Inspired by show gardens...

Show gardens and gardens open to the public can be sources of inspiration for gardeners and designers alike. You find styles of design and planting to suit all tastes and to celebrate the sheer joy of the garden.

I visited the Hampton Court Flower Show in July 2007 and was inspired particularly by Chris Beardshaw's school garden. It was fun, entertaining and full of ideas which would translate elsewhere.

Everyone who walked through this garden was smiling and talking to each other! It was a truly interactive garden because it created a response from people. It drew us in and enticed us around the next corner--so much detail, and humour.

There was a grass mound topped with a group of trees and woven willow den nestled between their trunks. All these features would 'stand alone' to create play space. As always, simplicity is the key to good garden design and ease of use.

This garden was created to showcase ideas to encourage children to grow fruit and vegetables, learn about wildlife, and display all sorts of art work.

However they could equally well be designed into care home gardens, community gardens, and domestic homes too, as long as safety issues are properly addressed of course.

In my experience we all have a fascination for fresh water pond-dipping and rock-pooling by the sea regardless of age!

The benefits of being outdoors are well documented. With sensitive thought and design, a garden can really make a difference to your life.

Gardens are great places to be in, to engage with, to explore and learn in. Your whole countenance can be lifted and your health improved!
