Edwardian home on a Sandstone Ridge

This delightful Edwardian property was built uniquely astride a prominent sandstone ridge with views predominantly to the south. The property was approached across an inadequate drive at an acute angle from the lane. Of prime importance to Mary's clients was improved access. At the same time a timber framed double garage and side porch were to be added to the property. Mary's clients were keen gardeners who recognised that the scale of improvements they needed within their large (2 acre) and challenging garden required professional input.

The Brief

  • Improved access to and from the property.
  • Retention of two mature Oak trees, a stand of Scots Pine, a mature Bay and several mature Yews.
  • Practical and visual marriage between existing and new parts of the garden, allowing for the possibility of further work in the future.
  • Incorporation of extensive existing planted borders into the new scheme.
  • Increased privacy between the client's and neighbouring properties.
  • Address drainage problems (this is on Wealden Clay!).
  • Enhance front porch with appropriate lighting.
  • Add a gazebo and fruit cage.
The Outcome

  • Not only is access to and from the lane improved, the property itself is enhanced as a result.
  • A distinction has been created between front and rear gardens by the positioning of the timber framed garage and pergola.
  • Appropriate materials have been used throughout the hard landscaped areas.
  • The pergola has created a stunning 'full stop' to the front garden which now affords privacy between this and the neighbouring property.
  • Functionality has been increased across the entire site.
  • New planting schemes work well with the existing borders whilst introducing stunning new plant combinations.
Client Testimonial

"We decided to use Mary's design service for our garden after realising it was too large and complicated for us to do ourselves. It is only after the project has been completed that we have realised how much work has gone into a successful garden design. Mary has at all times been attentive to our needs and desires, as well as co-ordinating very effectively with the contractor who did the work for us. I would say her services are worth every penny spent on them."
