A light and spacious garden in Crowborough
Mr and Mrs Goode had lived in their in their current home for 25 years; as this was in Crowborough, East Sussex, it was no surprise to find this had a sloping garden.
The garden had become overgrown with large shrubs well past their 'sell-by date'. The combination of a sloping site shaded with overpowering evergreens meant there was little incentive for Mary's clients to venture outside.
The overgrown shrubs not only made the garden feel small but considerably reduced the usable space. Even the Conservatory had little access onto the rear garden so it too was under-used.
- Keep the existing patio and retaining walls next to the house.
- Disguise the 'window to window' view at first floor level between Mary's client's property and the one immediately behind (where a mature conifer hedge had recently been removed).
- Remove overgrown shrubs.
- Create better access from the Conservatory to the garden.
- Do something positive with the garden!
- Make it grandchild-friendly.
- Create a planting scheme with year round appeal and easy maintenance.
- An additional patio with room for al fresco dining and relaxing is accessible straight from the Conservatory.
- A level lawn circles the patio creating lots of safe play area for young children.
- Three mature flowering trees form a delightful light camouflage between the two neighbouring properties.
- The new planting scheme is full of colour and texture.
- The garden is light and spacious, to the amazement of Mary's clients!
"Until we arranged a site visit by msgd, our eyes had not been opened to the potential our compact garden offered us. Having lived with the original layout for over 25 years we had formed the view that there was little scope within such a relatively small plot.
With msgd's patient approach and probing we began to be aware of the major shortfalls with the existing layout and, more importantly, how these shortfalls could be addressed.
The professional approach taken by msgd enabled us to be fully informed at all stages of the development that included concept planning through to finished product.
We are delighted with our new garden which has totally revitalised the interest in our property and, we are convinced, will give us many years of pleasure in the future."
