A country garden in Wiltshire
One of Mary Stevenson's previous clients had friends in Corsham, Wiltshire who wondered if Mary would design their garden too!
The prospect of designing a garden in a completely different geological area was something that Mary found inspiring.
The client's home was part of a converted stone barn with its three quarter acre garden mostly rising away to the north and western sides of the property.
Whilst very much a country garden, a stylish conservatory and summer house were soon to be added and would therefore be an integral part of the finished garden.
- To create a whole garden in sympathy with both the property and its location
- Levels to be created beyond the conservatory
- The new Amdega conservatory needed to lead out into the garden
- Garden levels in the enclosed north facing garden, which also included a natural pond, needed addressing
- Consideration to be given to the clients' young grandchildren and pets who visit frequently!
- View over farmland to the northwest to be kept open
- The parking area and access from it to the house needed attention; sloping steps were dangerous
- Raised beds and steps of oak sleepers built with generous proportions have created an elegant setting for the conservatory
- The same materials have been used in the north facing pond garden to make an ordered setting. The garden works as an integrated whole
- The planting schemes reflect and enhance each area of the garden varying from open sunny raised terraces to deep woodland shade. The client's are delighted!
- The parking area was levelled with oak sleeper retaining walls from which a flight of oak sleeper steps descend. This works both visually and practically
"I am writing to commend Mary Stevenson's design and project monitoring work for our garden in Wiltshire. The process was highly interactive. Where she really excelled, as we subsequently realised, was understanding the relationship between the house and the garden. Mary got the hard landscaping absolutely right, drawing the house to the garden and vice versa. The result was a formal and yet integrated design that showed the house to best effect and introduced surprise and delight within the garden by offering different places to sit, enjoy and walk. People visiting usually adopt their own favourite spot within a short time of being with us.
During delivery of the project Mary's experience and professionalism made the relationship with the contractor a very positive one.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Mary to anyone with a particularly challenging garden - and certainly to anyone with a less than challenging garden!"
